Sakurajima is almost constantly erupting, and with large eruptions the wind can carry huge amounts of volcanic ash to Kagoshima. The city provides pick-up points where residents can deposit bags of unwanted ash.

Kagoshima is very hilly, this is the walking trail to the Shiroyama Park Observation Deck (城山公園展望台). A cruise ship was in port and large buses had transported cruisers to the car park at the observation deck, but the walking trail was lightly used. We had purchased tickets for the Kagoshima City View tourist bus, but when it arrived at the bus stop it was so packed there was literally no room to board.
