The crater rim has a large heavily fortified visitors area/shelter.
Upper right
This is the inside of the shelter in Zone D. The roof of the shelter can be accessed, and it has large chunks of
tiles missing where objects have impacted the shelter during eruptions.
Lower left
This is the new-ish Zone E and associated shelters. Access was not allowed while we were there, however Zone E does
offer a view deep into the crater.
Lower right
The parking area at the crater, along with basically all older paved areas, is full of repairs from impactors
presumably ejected by the volcano.
Based on everything we saw there I'm guessing the authorities must take considerable care monitoring the gas plume and the general activity of Aso to ensure
that the volcano doesn't trigger a mass fatality event one day.
